It all started last week. The highly popular, free to play (but you can buy in game items) video game “Fortnite” was booted off the Apple app store. Then it was booted off the Google Play store. At issue for Epic, the company behind Fortnite, was the 30% that Apple takes for companies to sell services, items, etc. through an iOS app. Epic released a version of Fortnite on the Apple app store that allowed users to bypass the “Apple tax”, which didn’t set well with Apple and they removed Fortnite from their store. Google followed soon after.
There are lawsuits and other legal wranglings that are going on between Epic and Apple, and Epic and Google, but what I find more interesting is how we humans find no end in how we can turn situations like this into potential profit.
If you already have Fortnite on your Apple device, Apple’s not going to remove it (I won’t say they can’t like some articles because who really knows how much control they have over our devices). But if you have an Apple device that doesn’t have Fortnite on it, then you’re SOL when it comes to installing it since it’s no longer in the app store. Enter some folks with that entrepreneurial spirit, specifically on eBay.
For the low price of $10,000 you can have an iPhone X with Fortnite pre-installed. Yes…$10k, a 2 year old iPhone…and a free to play game.
Search eBay for “iphone fortnite installed” or “fortnite iphone” and see how many listings are returned. As of Wednesday…hundreds.
Is there anyone crazy enough to pay $4,300 for an iPhone 8 with Fortnite pre-installed on it? I hope not.
Just proves many folks will do just about anything for a buck.
